Thus, in spite of the adventurous and often horrific goings-on, this film often feels more like a history lesson than a swashbuckler.Based upon Jan Potocki's novel from 1813, "The Manuscript Found in Saragossa," this cult classic from Poland has just become available on DVD from the fine folks at FACETS in all its extended, exhausting and splendid glory. Amusing though THE SARAGOSSA MANUSCRIPT is, nearly every scene cries out that this is a literary adaptation. The problem may be Has’ obvious fidelity and respect for the original novel. Even without the ARABIAN NIGHTS motif, the film is plenty confusing. Unfortunately, Has remains deficient in an important area-that of storytelling. In addition, his gift for composition is evident throughout. Yet it still manages to stay afloat, perhaps because of Has’s witty, rather playful tone. The film has a truly giant cast of characters, boasting at least a dozen speaking parts. Those stories often contain supernatural elements including ghosts, Satanic pacts, dire prophecies, pre NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD flesh-gnashing zombies, and two Tunisian sister-witches…ĭirector Wojciech Has (THE HOURGLASS SANITORIUM, MEMOIRS OF A SINNER), certainly deserves points for ambition. Further complicating matters is a recurring motif where the hero awakens under a gallows tree, realizes that the preceding events have all been a dream, and, sure enough, finds himself waking up under that same gallows tree again and again… It all adds up to what can only be described as an intellectual crossword puzzle.Ī major scene toward the end of THE SARAGOSSA MANUSCRIPT has a group of characters attempting to sort out the impossibly convoluted narrative they find themselves trapped inside-it’s that confusing. The characters within each story also have a passion for storytelling, as do the characters in each of their stories, until the recursive individual tales eventually parallel, extend or just fill in the blanks of one another. Those stories often contain supernatural elements including ghosts, Satanic pacts, dire prophecies, pre NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD flesh-gnashing zombies, and two Tunisian sister-witches who make several appearances. The book tells of a young captain traveling through Spain where just about everyone he meets shares a story. …the visuals create a universe of their own, as demanding, exhausting, yet ultimately rewarding as the film itself.īased on a famous French novel by Count Jan Potocki (published in 1813, although it took until 1996 for a complete version to appear in English), THE SARAGOSSA MANUSCRIPT opens with a soldier finding an old book in the midst of an ongoing battle. As befits the film’s subject matter, the visuals create a universe of their own, as demanding, exhausting, yet ultimately rewarding as the film itself. At its best, it’s a veritable symphony of light and shadow (at its worst, it’s just murky). Hard, gritty, and yet appropriately dreamy, Jahoda’s work vividly brings the film’s abundance of surreal gothic imagery to life. The widescreen compositions are stunning and the atmospheric photography is even more so. The film is a visual feast from start to finish. Special mention must be made of Mieczyslaw Jahoda‘s impressive b/w photography. “Will undoubtedly send most viewers screaming for the exits, in search of the nearest Sonny Chiba film.” It’s a flawed, yet undeniably thought-provoking and sumptuous work. Possibly the farthest the screen has ever taken the ARABIAN NIGHTS story-within-a-story motif, this distinctly literary exercise is not a film for the uncommitted or casual viewer. A Polish art film made in 1965 and barely distributed stateside, THE SARAGOSSA MANUSCRIPT (REKOPIS ZNALEZIONY W SARAGOSSIE) has turned up in its uncut three-hour version (courtesy of Francis Ford Coppola and Martin Scorsese). A film that, according to Shock Cinema magazine’s Steven Puchalski, “Will undoubtedly send most viewers screaming for the exits, in search of the nearest Sonny Chiba film.” That’s probably true.

With Chrome OS, I can just right-click on the app's icon and select "open as window" to achieve the exact same effect. On my Mac, I typically run anywhere from four to ten Fluid instances at once - so I can quickly switch to my Gmail without thumbing through a dozen tabs, for instance. The latter two are the important new additions: they let you open web apps that feel like native apps, with no address bar or browser toolbars. Dragging a tab out to form its own window is simple, and setting up a dual-window, side-by-side workflow (which I use almost all the time) is a cinch.Īpps open in one of four ways: as a regular tab in the current window, as a pinned tab, as a full-screen chromeless window, or as a normal-sized chromeless window. Tabs and windows can be moved around and re-sized, and there's an Aero Snap-like feature that lets you drag a window over to the right or left edge and have it automatically resize to fill half the screen. But window management has been totally redone, and you can now manage Chrome apps and windows just as you would Windows or Mac apps. Of course, everything in Chrome OS still happens in a Chrome window, so the basic idea hasn't changed much. If you've enabled Chrome Sync, your bookmarks and apps will automatically be loaded onto your device, and either way you'll be logged into all the Google services using the credentials you supplied at the beginning. Setting up your Chromebook or Chromebox is dead simple: turn the device on, log in with your Google account. Everything's still browser-based, but Google has clearly realized that people want an interface that feels more like Windows or Mac OS X, even if the Chrome OS vision is for something different. Previous versions always felt like a lot of Chrome and not a lot of OS, as if the Chromebook was just a browser with a built-in keyboard. The greatest compliment I can pay the latest revision of Chrome OS is that it finally feels like an operating system. There are five popular font managers available for Macintosh: Some Macintosh font managers are also available for Windows there may be more that are Windows-only. Since most of my creative work is done on Macintosh, I can only discuss what’s available for macOS. There are a range of competent applications: each with their advantages and disadvantages, and a different selection for Macintosh and Windows. Next, let’s look at what font managers are available on the market today. They in turn will have their own licence agreements, which may – or may not – grant you the right to collect their font files with your Illustrator or InDesign project packages. If you want to package typefaces that are available on Adobe Fonts for archiving, then the only way you’ll be able to do so is to license those typefaces directly from the typefoundries in question. But you cannot collect Adobe Fonts typefaces as part of an Illustrator or InDesign project package for archiving. You can embed Adobe Fonts typefaces into PDF files. You can convert text formatted using Adobe Fonts typefaces into vector outlines if you like. You can use any typeface available on Adobe Fonts to create designs and layouts. These font files are also specifically tagged as being ‘Adobe Fonts’ files: a form of copyrighting that all Adobe applications will respect. When you activate a typeface from Adobe Fonts, the font files are installed on your computer, but not directly in the operating system’s font folders. Adobe Fonts gives you convenient access to a diverse range of typefaces, but it’s on Adobe’s licensing terms. And you’ll notice that there’s wording next to it that effectively says ‘Except Adobe Fonts’. One of those checkboxes – which is checked by default – is ‘Copy Fonts’. If you look closely at the ‘File > Package’ dialogue box, you’ll notice a set of checkboxes allowing you to choose what files get collected. However, if you ever try to collect Adobe Fonts font files when using Illustrator and InDesign’s ‘Package’ feature, you’ll notice that you can’t. And it all has to do with whether your layout includes typefaces that are from the Adobe Fonts service that’s part of you Creative Cloud subscription.Īdobe Fonts allows you access to thousands of fonts from dozens of independent typefoundries, and they can be conveniently activated when needed. The first part is fairly easy to answer, although you may not necessarily like the answer itself.

Often the primary plot will involve a contest or competition of some sort, encouraging the various characters to fight and destroy one another to obtain a reward. The complexity and strategy required to complete games vary, from the careful resource maintenance and intense story-driven plotlines of the Interstate '76 series to straightforward smashups like WWE Crush Hour. Vehicular combat games differ from traditional racing games both in the combat aspect and in the general lack of any set path for players to follow, instead allowing them to explore each level at their leisure. Vehicular combat games normally follow a simple play pattern the player must defeat increasing numbers of not very skilled enemies before facing off against a final, super-powerful, boss character. Games may include racing themes, but they are generally secondary to the action. Players may also unlock hidden vehicles by completing certain in-game tasks. The genre normally features a variety of different vehicles available for play, each with its own strengths, weaknesses, and special attack abilities. Vehicular combat games (also known as just vehicular combat or car combat) are a sub-genre of vehicle simulation video games where the primary objectives of gameplay include vehicles armed with weapons attempting to destroy vehicles controlled by the CPU or by opposing players. The Knitting Nannas are also using their needles for good, raising awareness about coal seam gas and mining exploration by way of knitting items that both functionally and symbolically protest the mining of agricultural land. Knit Your Revolt is sticking its needles in and taking a stand against the notion that craft is an inferior pastime, and those who do it are inequal, weak or should be discounted. Many craftivist combine their creative and political pursuits. When these media dinosaurs say that knitting cannot go hand in hand with strength, what they are really saying is that anything associated with women – and by extension women themselves – cannot be strong. A group called Knit Your Revolt is reviving the image of the former PM Julia Gillard knitting to challenge misogyny in politics and society. In the Australian context, craftivist activities have broached many political issues. Through activities such as teaching knitting lessons, crocheting hats for the less fortunate, and sewing blankets for abandoned animals, craftivism allows for creativity to expand previous boundaries and enter the arena of activism.Īs such, craftivism describes a wide range of craft-based activities that have the ultimate aim of making the world a better place, however that is conceptualised. While not a new phenomenon, craftivism is playing an increasingly prominent role in the creative pursuits of activists, particularly when it comes to political and social causes.Īccording to Betsy Greer, aka the godmother of craftivism, and the woman who coined the term, craftivism is a way for practitioners to voice their opinions through creativity: So keep at least 30, they're not hard to get especially since you can only ever buy uncommon cards essentially. They are needed for the quest to recycle 30 Cards. I would suggest not recycling them until you finish the questline, or until you want to upgrade that awesome card you get (a purple one for example). The Giggitywatt cards are an uncommon recycle only card, that give you 5 points for upgrades. So lets talk about recycling and upgrading cards. It's a horrible system and they need to fix it. In the meantime you have people playing along side these afk players in the group, that you can't kick until the rumble is over, that are decimating your chances of getting better rewards. Not really worth the time imo but, it can be done. So yes, even if you afk farm it, you could get _something_ out of the game. Epic stones, in multiples of 1,000, are used to buy a random epic (blue) card. That is enough to get Tier 17 which is 500 Coins and 200 Epic Stones. the guild would accumulate 45,000 points. So if a 50 person active guild that has new players, loses every single battle, in the 6 days of the rumble with 3 matches per day. if a player loses all 10 matches, they will give 50 points to the groups score. In our rumbles this week, we have averaged 12 players in each battle. Our guild has 50 members, but right now 45 are active. So between the start of the rumble, 5 players stopped playing. So that gives you a 30 minute window between rumbles to do guild management every week. Each guild can only have 50 players, and you cannot kick players from the guild once a rumble starts. But this only works if the players in the guild actually work in the Rumble!. The rumble works great if you get into a guild that does something useful with their life. And beyond that, I have been learning as many combos as I can to progress, while trying to complete the main mission quests to get free epic / legendary (blue and purple) card packs. So far, I have upgraded all of the cards that I have started with, recycled a lot of uncommon cards to do so. So I have just hit one week exactly of playing this game, and I have about 20 hours of actual in-game play-time.

Batman can also counter foes by tapping a certain body part on the screen which will result in a takedown (or deplete a lot of their health). If an enemy attempts to punch Batman, the player can slide their finger down to deflect the foe's attack. If the player moves their finger left and right, they can make Batman punch his foes repeatedly.
